87th annual Academy Awards 2015

Just like every year, it has become a little tradition in the blog to comment the Academy Awards' red carpet (the only thing that matters at the Oscars) because these awards always bring me rage as i don't think they truly award, or nominate, the ones who really deserve it.

Anyway, i can't say much about the awards this year because i've only seen 'Birdman', which was ok but i didn't emphasize with any character, 'Boyhood', a little bit of the same with the exception of the uber sweet Patricia Arquette,  'The Theory of Everything', that was nice but boring, 'Gone Girl', good but so long and a bit tedious, 'Interstellar' (meh) and 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' that i didn't like as everyone else seems to do. The movie of the year for me was 'Under the Skin' which had no nominations whatsoever when deserved original score, photography and a lot more, so anything else can suck it for me. As for the actress, i'm really happy that Patricia Arquette won because she totally deserved it, and just like the amazing Julianne Moore (who was amazing this year in 'Maps to the Stars' as well). And when it comes to Best Actor it sucks that Michael Keaton didn't win for his Black Swan comeback, but Eddie Redmayne did good and i like him as well.

So let's talk about what really matters here that are the red carpet looks! Truth is i expected more, i always expect more, but well here there are the looks of everyone that mattered last night at the awards, after the cut!

10 years of Silent Alarm

10 years already of the debut album of one of my favorite bands. And what a debut. A powerful, fresh record with no bad song, perfect from beginning to end. Not only it contains three of the songs of my very personal Top 10 Bloc Party songs but also it has my favourite, 'Like Modern Love' which still is my number 1.

I remember back in the day me watching MTV2 and coming across 'Banquet' and loving it instantly. Nor did the song end that i was already adoring that new band and looking for more. And while this might be for many their best album– i really don't want to enter that– it was a really great start and they haven't slowed down a bit, more disco or still rocking their guitars, they're still on top of their game.

So, if you haven't listened to this awesome album please do below, starting with songs like 'Like Eating Glass', 'Helicopter', 'Positive Tension',  'Banquet' (ofc) that will give you a lot of energy and others like 'Blue Light' and 'This Modern Love' will melt your heart. A little gem.

Making Space by Petra Collins

Petra Collins' new project 'Nowness', the first of a series of three documentaries about teen dancers, is something you should be excited about. The famous rookie photographer and her sister embark on a road trip all across the Deep South to explore what it means to be young in 2015, and if someone can explain that it's her.

I love Petra Collins precisely because she captures a really different side of adolescence, she doesn't like the typical teen commercial dream that can be seen in tv shows or movies, she captures it as it is and as it's shown in her photographs. That's why, in my opinion, she's so big. That intimacy, that mood she catches with her camera is something that i've only seen in other female directors –like my favourite Sofia Coppola in 'The Virgin Suicides' or now Gia Coppola in 'Palo Alto'– and it's something that i really love. Here's what she says about this project:

“Anna and I went into making these docs thinking that most of the girls would be like us,” she says of portraiting the star-spangled dance team of a New Orleans high school and the realization unearthed along the way. “They would be facing the same problems we faced as teens—self-esteem issues, eating disorders, etc—and by the end of the trip we realized that every girl we interviewed was totally confident, powerful, and that most of them didn't struggle with those things.” 

It's really curious that now that my teen years are way behind and that girls now seem to be so much pressured about her looks and more judged about her actions, that they embrace all that pressure and find themselves, probably, at an earlier age than what we used to do in the 90s. It's surprising and a relief for me as being confident and comfortable in your own skin was my struggle during those years.

Top favorite Madonna performances

Madonna performed at the Grammy Awards on Sunday night, she was back after some years and while the performance was ok, it didn't live up to other amazing performances she's done before.

I know Madonna is not what she used to be, but who could keep being awesome, innovative and groundbreaking after 30 years? Exactly. So i'm posting some of my favourite performances from the Queen herself, from award shows to tour shows, she has always put on a show when performing live. Who could forget her iconic performance of Vogue ala Marie Antoinette during the MTV Awards in 1990? Or Lenny Kravitz playing guitar to 'Ray of Light' in 1998? I know, lots of Madonna lately here, but i'm an unapologetic bitch.

American Horror Story: Freak Show

(Spoilerish)
This season of 'American Horror Story: Freak Show' started like a really huge mess, the first episodes where really bad in my opinion and i almost quit watching the show but... the Halloween eps really made a difference. Wes Bentley's haunted character and the curse of never performing on Halloween was really a great turn for the season, and it all started getting better after that. Ryan Murphy wasn't joking when he said that this season was going to be the bloodiest one, and sure was. The most violent murders and cruelest scenes happened during this season, and all that evoked mixed emotions of not watching and loving to watch at the same time.

It had nearly all the Coven cast back: Jessica Lange (Freak Show being the last AHS she's going to be in), Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Sarah Paulson, Frances Conroy, Emma Roberts, Gabourey Sidibe, Evan Peters, Jamie Brewer... among many others and it had the super nice and lovely addition of Jyoti Amge (Ma Petite) that melted everyone's hearts.

As it hasn't been a bad season at all, even though it might be the less good out of the other three seasons, i'm posting below some of the best music scenes the season had. Who could forget Jessica Lange covering Lana del Rey's 'Gods and Monsters' that fitted so perfectly in the circus of freaks, just like Evan Peters' singing 'Come As You Are'. But the most memorable performance has to be Miss Elsa's 'Life on Mars', of course, some might be bored of her singing that song by the end of the season, but it was always a really touching moment when a star like Elsa wants to hit stardom and she doesn't. And who could forget that heartbreaking performance when she was booed by the audience, it was devastating.

Christian Dior Spring 2015 Couture

Dior's Haute Couture shows are always a delicious thing to admire, not only for the beautiful collection but also for the über gorgeous set. The gardens of the Musée Rodin served to create a magical setting and as always Carin Olsson from the parisinfourmonths IG, has captured its beauty.

The collection is really fantastic, pleated skirts, guipure dresses and outfits that give a sixtie-esque feeling, as well as some plastic coats (or at least it looks like it) that make for a very diverse but yet fantastic collection.

I'm posting more set pictures after the cut and some photos from the collection for you to enjoy and admire the absolute beauty that it's always present on Dior's shows in Paris. J'adore.

A tour through Madonna's discography

Madonna's new album is scheduled to be out in March even though we have already listened to 6 tracks she released (and some others that were illegally leaked). Based on what i've heard from those legally released songs, 'Rebel Heart' seems to be the best album Madonna has released in years (ever since 'Confessions on a Dance Floor' in 2005) so i've decided to make a little tour through her discography and put my favourite songs from each album. Because even though she might have records that are a little meh, there's always a good song there.

I'm starting from the beginning, from her very first album to her newest one, so get ready for a quick reminder why Madonna is the Queen of Pop and she still is.

'Girlhood' (Bande de Filles) trailer

Once i watched Richard Linklater's 'Boyhood', i demanded that a 'Girlhood' should be in the making. Well then, there's one coming up but not from Linklater but from French director Céline Sciamma. And i have no complaints.

The trailer so far looks promising, instead of starting the story during the protagonist's childhood it focuses on her teens, which is a key moment in any girl's life. One of the things i missed when i watched 'Boyhood' is that it didn't go in depth into important coming of age moments like the first kiss, the first time, body issues, etc., and it seems here we will see some of these.

It has no premiere date here in Spain yet but let's hope it doesn't take too long because now i'm curious to see this film (as well as the two other movies Sciamma has also directed, 'Tomboy' and 'Water Lillies', focused on girls too). Watch the trailer below:

W Magazine's The Movie Issue

W Magazine is featuring the 39 best performances of the year with photographs of the actors taken by fabulous photographer Tim Walker and of course the result is flawless.

Among the ones i've seen there's the fantastic Bill Hader in 'The Skeleton Twins' (such a shame they didn't feature Kristen Wiig), Scarlett Johansson in 'Under the Skin' (portrait at the source) or Ethan Hawke for 'Boyhood' but i'm anxious to check out the rest as Oscar season is coming.

Daisy Trio by Marc Jacobs

You know i love anything Sofia Coppola and anything 'The Virgin Suicides'. So when Sofia directed the tv ad of Daisy by Marc Jacobs, i loved it, and now that she's at it again – this time Daisy Trio by Marc Jacobs– i love it too.

This time it really goes Lisbon sisters and features more than just one girl, wandering through the fields and dreaming about love while CHVRCHES' music plays. Enjoy Sofia Coppola's dreamy world with the ad below:
