It's season finale time! (Part l)

It's time to catch up and some series finales shows that i have seen lately and that i could not comment on, and i really had to do it. There are many more i want to talk about so i'll be making another post for others shows like 'Dark', 'Everything Sucks', the season finale of 'Love', 'Divorce' or the upcoming 'Grey's Anatomy', but in the meantime here are the ones that i recently watched. It has minor spoilers but you've been warned!

UnReal (Season 3) - The thing with 'UnReal' is that the first season was outstanding, it was such a guilty pleasure that it was hard to live up to that. The second season was fine and now the third one, with a suitress instead of a male suitor, was a nice change for the show's formula, and while it wasn't bad, it was not amazing either. But i adore dark and twisted characters like Quinn and i love watching this mess of a show. Now, the preview of the fourth season was something... beyond.They totally had to change their formula and they did a twist that we didn't expect at all, that was having Rachel as the suitress. And we all know she's going to be a mess, a complete and total mess. And i really can't wait to watch it but we'll have to wait until 2019.

The X Files (Season 11) It's really surprinsing but this season of 'The X Files' has been excellent. Sure it had some boring episodes like the two first eps and the Skinner one, but the rest have been absolutely fantastic. From 'Plus One' or 'Familiar' that echoed the good old seasons, to the 'Black Mirror'-esque 'Rm9sbG93ZXJz', this season made us believe that the show hasn't lost its touch. it hasn't but maybe it's about time that we say goodbye for good to the show and end it on a high note, after all, it seems that Gillian Anderson is not coming back for more seasons. But anyway, whatever happens to the show i have to admit that Mulder and Scully still make my heart skip a beat.

American Crime Story: Versace  I was really looking forward to see what Ryan Murphy had done with the murder case of one of the most important fashion designers in the world, especially when it had Penélope Cruz as Donatella Versace, but the season has been a bit of a let down. Sure the actors are all amazing on the show, from the lead Darren Criss, to Penélope, Edgar Ramirez as Gianni or personal favorites of mine like Michael Nouri or Max Greenfield, the cast is brilliant but the story... not so much. As many others, i expected to see more of the Versace family but instead we got a look at the complete life of the murderer Andrew Cunanan and hence, the disappointment. And it wasn't a bad story but i was looking forward to see a different story.

'UnReal' Season 2

(Spoilers)
First of all let's address all the critics and hating that this second season of  'UnReal' had. That it's not as great as the first season, that it lost its freshness, that it's not good anymore... Total BS. I really hate when people immediately throw a show under the bus because it's not as perfect as it used to be, especially when it comes to second seasons. Of course the show has kinda lost its surprise effect after season one, because then we got what the show was all about, it can't be that surprising anymore with the second season. But that doesn't mean it hasn't been. I have to admit though that expectations were too high and the second season started kinda weak. But let's begin.

The second season of 'UnReal' was highly expected by me after the perfection that the first season was. It's one of those shows that you kinda say to yourself, this totally is my cup of tea. And as it was already renewed for a third season right before the second one started, i was anxious about it. And as i said, it didn't kick off in the beginning as expected but that doesn't mean it wasn't good at all. It's like with all those 'Game of Thrones' fans who now say that the show is boring because there's not murder all the time. It's nosense. A show has to surprise but also we have to allow to take its time to develop plots and let's us surprise us in the end, And that's what happened with 'Unreal'. Obviously, the idea of the show was so good that it couldn't live up much longer but the repeated formula which obviously is gonna remain on the show (that we know of) worked out fine this time as well.

This season was darker, colder and crueler to the bachelor as well to the contestants, and also between co-workers, like everything was on the edge. The relationship between Rachel and Quinn suffered quite a lot but as one of the key elements of the show, it was proven to be stronger than ever towards the end of the season. We also have seen more of Jay and Madison and that's nice because they have been quite good this time, especially hopeless romantic Jay. And while the season has not been perfect, it ended perfectly. The finale, with Ruby coming back for her man was something great, unexpected and made it for a happy ending that noone saw coming. And that's why i think this season of 'UnReal' has been great because it leaded towards a perfect ending season. "True love, who gets that?" those lines of Quinn really got me, and mark a perfect brooch for an ending that could as well be titled as 'How To Get Away with Murder', with both Quinn and Rachel laying down like at the end of season 1 but this time with Jeremy and Chet. Perfect ending scene for a very decent season. Now give more of 'UnReal'.

Movies

As usual, i catch up on movies from last year because here everything gets released a bit later and there have been some really great surprises in cinema this year but i haven't watched as many movies as i would have loved to. But here are the ones that i really loved:

Mommy - this was such an experience to watch and such a mind-blowing movie. I was aware of the good critics it had and it was not disappointing at all. Xavier Dolan makes a film about emotions and you can't help but to feel them all, and it's heartbreaking in a beautiful way. Must-watch.

It Follows - I have already talked about this movie in the 5 Modern Horror Film for Halloween post and i can't recommend it more. It's a film like none other and it gives you 80s vibes, and that's a good thing. Watch it and get intrigued yourself, the less you know about this movie, the better but watch it.

Relatos salvajes - this Argentinian movie was amazing, a combination of drama stories with a lot of comedy ones and it is so worth watching that even if you don't speak Spanish you have to give it a try because it's so, so good.

Whiplash - was another super nice surprise, in my opinion deserved the Oscar for Best Film instead of 'Birdman', but anyway, the film has superb and over the edge performances that make the movie so exciting and powerful with all that drumming that it stand out for me among the other nominees from last year.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - And what about 'Star Wars'? i'm a fan of the old trilogy so imagine my surprise when this new movie was nothing like the new saga from a few years ago and so like the good old movies. It contains all the excitement and nostalgia that the original trilogy had and it feels like coming home. Maybe it's not as superb as those movies but it has the same feeling and i can't wait for the rest.

The Hateful Eight - while i'm still processing this film as i've just watched it, i had to include it here. It may be too long or whatever but it was good old Tarantino as i have missed in other recent movies like 'Django Unchained' or 'Inglourious Basterds'. Those movies are ok but i felt like there was something missing from his signature style. Anyway, while maybe i found the ending kinda weak, the rest is amazing, and keeps you guessing all the time. That and a ton of great and charismatic characters (which i think that that was precisely missing from his two previous films) makes a nearly perfect movie that may be not his best but is far from its worst film. Watch it and decide for yourself.

TV Shows

It has been a really exciting year when it comes to TV shows, i don't think i ever started watching so many series in a year like this one. So many brand new good shows like starting for my fave one that can't be none other than 'Scream Queens', it was so good and such a guilty pleasure that i'm suffering withdrawal now that it's over; also, 'Unreal' has been such a pleasant surprise, i binge-watched the whole first season in less than a week and it was so, so good i got two friends of mine hooked to it (which is never easy). 'Scream' has also been one of the top shows this year, i don't think noone expected it to be any good but it was. 'Flesh and Bone', which i just finished watching, was simply mind-blowing and i have to make a post next year about it because it's so worth-watching, you have no idea. Currently i'm watching 'Jessica Jones' and i can't comment on it until i watch the whole first season but i'm liking it so far; and, 'Younger' which was a breeze of fresh air, a simple but cute comedy that has replaced my good feeling series that was 'Hart of Dixie', that had its final season this year. Because this year a few series that i loved have come to an end, like 'Hart of Dixie' as i said, which had run its course but had such a nice ending that made you feel sad about it. Also, the cancellation of 'Looking' was something so disappointing and unfair, luckily it will have a closure but is still so sad after having such a great season this year. 'Cougar Town' also came to and end but it was dead good funny till its very end.  And this year has also been the comeback of 'The Comeback', which i just started watching and it was something else, really enjoyed it.

As for the other shows that i was already watching, 'Game of Thrones' remained one of the best series of the year despite people saying that it's not as good as it used to be. 'Girls' didn't disappoint and had a lot of heartfelt moments in between comedic ones, which i love; surprisingly, 'Grey's Anatomy' continues to be interesting after so many seasons and i can't help but keep watching; 'Orange is the New Black' was ok, i enjoyed the third season but not as much as the two other seasons, such a shame; 'Faking It' has continued to be good but somehow has lost its freshness so soon but it's still fun to watch; and 'Awkward', big sister of 'Faking It', it's about to end next year and well, while it's not as good as it used to be, it will be missed. 'Broad City' remained flawless as it is and i quit watching 'American Horror Story: Hotel' after one ep because that's one big mess.

When it comes to reality shows, 'Barely Famous' and 'Dash Dolls' have been the brand new two shows that i started watching and while the first one was really hilarious and you should watch it, the Dash girls were something entertaining if you like the Kardashians and such.


Musique

When it comes to music, these four albums have been the ones i played most because, what a little gem is Carly Rae Jepsen's 'Emotion'? It's a perfect pop album and i don't think it's valued as it should be. Also, Madonna made a great comeback with 'Rebel Heart', her best album in years and i hope she continues that way. 'Miley Cyrus and her Dead Petz' was also a nice surprise because i don't think noone expected an album like this coming from her and it was fantastic. And 'Communion' by Years & Years was the most fantastic debut album that little by little, with each listen grew on me.

'UnReal' Season 1

How can i start talking about the absolute show of the Summer, 'UnReal'? I started watching it because i was short on tv shows (who isn't in Summer) and as i heard tons of good things about it i gave it a try and... watched the seven episodes that have already aired in a week.

'UnReal' uses the reality show format for its own benefit, it's like it takes what people like of them into the show so you have the good thing about both formats in the same show. But don't think this is a mere guilty pleasure, the surprise with 'UnReal' is that it's far from a dumb show. It starts kinda like that but soon it gets darker and that's when you start to love it. Not only do we see what would a group of contestants do for the love of the bachelor, but also how twisted and manipulative is the world of reality tv. It's all for the ratings no matter what, no matter who, and that's ain't just an expression.

Another great thing that this show is the badness and fierceness of its two female protagonists. Not only the main character Rachel (Shiri Appleby) is not your troubled ordinary leading lady, she's far from that, but also Quinn (Constance Zimmer) is the epitome of bad bitch, two strong characters that are the key element of the series. Because where do we find such complicated and disturbing female characters? With Quinn is easy, the average boss who has to be a bitch in a world of men (not to take any credit to Zimmer's amazing portrayal of her) but a character like Rachel? I don't think no one fully understands her. Of course, when you start watching a show you're kinda forced to like the main character but not here, and it's something i liked a lot from the show. Rachel is not your average complicated protagonist, she's much more complex than that, you don't get sometimes why she does things and she has her low moments and makes bad decisions like any other person, but still, she's a whole mess you cannot clean up. And if you think you do then explain me what was going on in her mind when talking to Quinn in that very last scene with them on the finale?

I can't, seriously, i can't recommend this show more because it would physically hurt. I already have two friends hooked on it like heroine so give it a watch because this show is the show of the Summer, 'Sense8' who?
