The films of Sofia Coppola

It's no secret that i'm a Sofia Coppola movie lover, 'Lost in Translation' is my favourite movie and the work of this director is always something really special to me. From the intimacy and personal mark of her stories to the beautiful images of her movies, the music of Air and Phoenix always sounding, or the female characters that she so exquisitely includes, everything Sofia Coppola is an instant favourite to me. Even though 'Somewhere' didn't touch me as her first two films ('The Virgin Suicides' & 'Lost in Translation') and i liked 'Marie Antoinette' better (that movie is a candy jewel wrapped in pink), and while waiting for her latest project 'The Ring Bling' to premiere, here's a flawless video full of beautiful scenes of her four movies to date, and i added a ton of beautiful stills after the cut, so hard to choose between my favourites, but always a pleasure to see:

A Very Murray Christmas trailer

I'm not really into Christmas but i'm getting really, really excited with this Sofia Coppola special coming up on December 4 on Netflix. First of all, she's back working with Bill Murray after my still favourite movie 'Lost in Translation', and now we get a deeper taste of what is coming.

The trailer looks really great, like those old Christmas specials (which is obviously the idea) but Sofia has really captured that whole mood, because it looks familiar, it looks close and at the same time exciting for that big show Murray has to offer. We also get a look at other characters included like Amy Poehler, George Clooney, Jason Schwartzman, Michael Cera and more, and while before i was looking forward to see this but not with a lot of enthusiasm, now i can't wait for Dec. 4. And Bill Murray is also going to sing a song along with Phoenix!

Watch the trailer below and get excited about Christmas this year:

A very Murray Christmas directed by Sofia Coppola

Last year it was announced that Sofia Coppola was going to direct a Christmas special for Netflix with Bill Murray and Miley Cyrus. While the Miley thing is random coming from Sofia, the Murray casting is perfect as they reunite working together after the much acclaimed (and my personal favourite) 'Lost in Translation'. So, now that Christmas is coming (earlier every year), we've got a teaser of the upcoming special and it looks like the perfect and classic Xmas show. Sofia keeps in it the family with Jason Schwartzman and Phoenix making an appearance, but also we will see the very funny Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolf, George Clooney and Michael Cera among others.

And while we're waiting for a new project coming from Sofia Coppola that will surely reunite her with Kirsten Dunst, let's watch the Very Murray Christmas teaser from netflix and chill:

86th Annual Academy Awards 2014

In case you didn't know, the Academy Awards were last night and while i was tempted to watch them since i've seen many of the nominated movies this year, i went to sleep and did my catching up in the morning. Usually, i'm making a post about the red carpet and its best looks only, but is it me or this year the red carpet fashion has been really boring? So i feel like discussing the whole thing, who won, who lost, who was best dressed and who should have been nominated, let's begin!

This had to be one of the most predictable Academy Awards. '12 Years a Slave' won the Best Movie Award, Cuarón won Best Director for 'Gravity', McConaughey Best Actor for 'Dallas Buyers Club', just like Jared Leto as Best Supporting Actor and 'Her' got the super deserved award for Best Original Screenplay. Those were all a given. I was happy for 'Her' and for both DBC actors, i watched the movie yesterday and both did great. Still, it is painful for Leonardo DiCaprio, sure his role on 'The Wolf of Wall Street' wasn't his best one but give an Oscar to this man already, we all know he deserves it.

Anyway, i was afraid that Cate Blanchett wouldn't win the Oscar for Best Actress in 'Blue Jasmine' because of the Woody Allen controversy. She really owned the movie and did an excellent, flawless performance, so nothing should have come in the way of that. So i'm really happy for that as well, just like for Lupita Nyong'o win for '12 Years a Slave' instead of Jennifer Lawrence. Don't get me wrong, JenLaw did a really great and hilarious performance in 'American Hustle' (the only good thing about the movie tbh), but there's no way she would win another Oscar. She deserved it for 'Winter's Bone' but not for 'Silver Linings Playbook', and sure Lupita was way better than her in the Steve McQueen movie.

And none for 'American Hustle', lol.

Still, i'm mad that 'La Vie d'Adèle' ('Blue is the Warmest Colour') wasn't nominated for Best Foreign Movie – though i'm happy that 'La Grande Bellezza' ('The Great Beauty') won instead of 'The Hunt', but still, i liked the French movie better than the others nominated. And 'Short Term 12' should had at least been nominated for Screenplay or even recognised some of the magnificent performances of the movie. Forever underrated. And also, we all know that Joaquin Phoenix should had been nominated for his emotional performance in 'Her', as well as Spike Jonze as a director or even Amy Adams (who was better in this movie than in 'American Hustle'). And let's be honest, Scarlett Johansson's voice in the film deserved a nomination, she was better with her voice than some other performances that were nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.

And finally, the ladies! If there's someone who owned the red carpet this year, that was Lupita in a flawless Prada dress. She really stole the show and looked absolutely beautiful and mesmerizing:

My second favourite was Kate Hudson in this stunning Atelier Versace gown that looked amazing on her. This was nearly my favourite dress of the night and she looked flawless:

Karen O was also fantastic in this elegant Camilla Staerk looking really classy and pretty:

Emma Watson looked really classy in this Vera Wang dress, always looking on point but her look at the Golden Globes remains one of my favourites:

Cate Blanchett also looked like a winner wearing Armani Privé, she looked nice but didn't wow though the dress was really pretty:

And Naomi Watts (a personal favourite) looked fresh and beautiful in Calvin Klein, i would have posted a red carpet photo but it looks way better in this really great Vanity Fair portrait so i'm posting this one and a few others that i loved:

10 years of 'Lost in Translation'.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

And 10 years being my favourite movie. It is something irrational having a favorite something, you know it's not the best thing out there but still it is your fave, it's close to your heart and there isn't any other one that comes even close. I've had some other favorites in my life, depending on the age, like 'Gone with the Wind' when i was really little, or 'Labyrinth' later but it's been quite a while since 'Lost in Translation' has been my #1.

I remember going to the cinema to watch it with a friend on a hangover Sunday, we didn't know what it was about or anything, just that people were saying it was "good", and i remember that we both of us left the cinema thinking, "Nothing really happened". But it sure did. Next weekend, when we met again, we had a very different opinion about the movie, during the week, the film stuck in our heads, thinking about it and reflecting on it nonstop. By a few days, we understood everything. And that's how it became my favourite movie to date.

In 10 years i think i've watched it less than 10 times, i don't want to watch it way too many times in case it loses its charm, or what makes it special, so i only allow myself to watch it when i'm feeling really sad or down, because this movie always, always, makes me feel a lot better. Because in a way, Sofia Coppola's movie is about hope, about finding someone else who gives us that little push we need to carry on with life when everything seems hopeless and meaningless. And i think the ending is all about that. In a way, i think all of us have in mind our very own idea of what Bob whispers to Charlotte in the ending scene, and that's something precious as well, our very own closure of the movie.

I also like the late film critic Roger Ebert's take on the ending scene, because is also beautiful and really accurate:

So much has been written about those few words at the end that Bob whispers into Charlottes' ear. We can't hear them. They seem meaningful for both of them. Coppola said she didn't know. It wasn't scripted. Advanced sound engineering has been used to produce a fuzzy enhancement. Harry Caul of "The Conversation" would be proud of it, but it's entirely irrelevant. Those words weren't for our ears. Coppola (1) didn't write the dialog, (2) didn't intentionally record the dialogue, and (3) was happy to release the movie that way, so we cannot hear. Why must we know? Do we need closure? This isn't a closure kind of movie. We get all we need in simply knowing they share a moment private to them, and seeing that it contains something true before they part forever.

As i've already posted my fave pictures of the movie in the Films of SC post, below there's a deleted scene i wish it had been included, because it explains how lost and lonely the character of Charlotte really feels, and the whole point of the movie, how even with something like a robot, that couldn't possibly make her feel more isolated in a city like Tokyo, she really is.
