20 Years of 'Sex & The City' and 20 Reasons Why It Remains Fabulous

'Sex and The City' turns 20 years old this week, can you believe? It seems like yesterday that this show about some thirty-something women first aired and changed TV forever. Yeah, that might sound dramatic but it did, as there was no other show that talked that openly about sex, and coming from a female perspective no less! So, they need to be appreciated more because even though the first seasons look a bit outdated now because of the fashion and those monologues from random people straight to the camera, the rest feels fresh and the feelings, doubts and humour remains relatable.

So, in honor of one of the best shows ever and one of my personal favorites, here are 20 reasons why this show remains flawless, in no specific order. Check them all out after the cut!

The girls

Each of the four main characters are simply amazing. From Miranda's neurotic ways, to Charlotte's prude mentality, Samantha's festive way of life or Carrie's dramas, there isn't one that could be missing. I'm a Miranda and I know some say she's the worst one but they certainly don't know a thing as she's the most down to earth character. And while Carrie was at first everyone's favorite, i liked that as seasons went on, people preferred the other girls. But as a whole they made the best combo of women you could ever have.

The City

If there's a big love story in the show, is the one that the characters have with New York City and they made you fall in love with it too. From restaurants to the Manhattan Bridge, to cool spots in the Soho or fancy boutiques, the show was full of locations that made you wonder how amazing it must be to live right there. I don't think there has been another show that showed the City as great as they did, even though 'Gossip Girl' did really nice as well.

Female friendship

One of the most important things of the show is not the sex or their relationships they had with other men, but the friendship between four ladies. It's beautifully shown and you could see their ups and downs but in the end they had each other's back no matter what and that was the biggest bond the series had. And they made me tear up a little whenever they got emotional between them, they argued or they simply showed their true love for each other.

Top 10 favorite TV female characters

Last week, we've received the news everyone was waiting for, 'Scream Queens' got renewed for a second season! And while i thought like Ryan Murphy did with 'American Horror Story', that the new season was gonna have an entirely new set of characters and a new story, it turns out that not only Lea Michele is reprising her role as Hester, but Chanel Oberlin will be back! That's right, sluts, Emma Roberts will play again the infamous sorority queen and i'm so excited about it because i thought Chanel was out of our lives for good. Because with only one season she has already become one of my favorite tv characters, and i know she is too for many out there. So, as a celebration of that, i'm making a list of my favorite tv characters of all time from some of my fave shows, listed in chronological order behind the cut, so enjoy and share yours!

Audrey Horne - Twin Peaks (1990)

Audrey Horne was too dreamy for an apparently boring town like Twin Peaks where nothing ever happened, until Laura Palmer's death, that is. Sherilyn Fenn played this teen temptress that fell instantly in love with agent Cooper and that loved coffee just because of him. Audrey was too much for such a small town and often danced in places just because. Her wit, mischievous ways and innocence all combined made her stand out from the rest. And she's going to be in the revival of the series so i can't wait for that.

The Hollywood Reporter's 100 Favourite TV Shows

The Emmys were last night and while i was super bummed that Lena Headey didn't win for her  amazing portrayal of Cersei Lannister in 'Game of Thrones', especially this season, the rest was ok to me because basically i don't watch most of those who won.

So, what a better way to celebrate tv shows with The Hollywood Reporter's 100 Favourite Shows voted by their readers. As usual, not everyone agrees 100% with lists but this one is not bad and features some of my fave series on really high positions. Of course i'm missing shows like 'My So-Called Life', 'Girls' or 'Grey's Anatomy'. but i'm commenting the ones i liked best after the cut.

Top 10 favourite TV couples

Buzzzfed made some time ago a list about the TV couples you wish were real so i decided to make my very own, but instead, of my fave TV couples ever. I'm a serious TV-addict, so this was a big deal to me, so here you've got my Top 10 TV couples from 'Friends', 'Gossip Girl', 'Lost', 'Skins', 'The O.C.', 'Sex and the City' and more, check them out in non specific order after the cut: 

'The Carrie Diaries' second season (or show) finale.

One has to watch 'The Carrie Diaries' without thinking too much about 'Sex and the City' or Sarah Jessica Parker, that's the only way to enjoy it. Because, let's be honest, this supposed "prequel" is far from the flawlessly that was the original show. That was a given, i mean, it was really hard to attempt to achieve that. It doesn't have the same humour, there's barely any talk about sex – or if there is, it's not discussed in depth or there's no funny element about it– and all the drama is really naive, really highschool material, when given their age and time, it could have been way better. And the fashion, it doesn't even look like the 80s, for God's sake.

Still, the show and its connection to the Carrie Bradshaw of SATC it's gonna start now, if there's a third season, which i doubt. At first i was excited about seeing a young Carrie, having her first time, her first Cosmopolitan, buying her first pair of Manolos (that hasn't happened yet), but if anything, that's gonna happen in the next season, because that would be Carrie living in the city and finally cutting family ties (let's hope). Because, i don't recall Mrs. Bradshaw talking about her sister on the show but once, and that's it. Also, it would mean (i'm guessing) the introduction of several characters like Stanford or even Miranda and Charlotte, which i would love to see (even though the Samantha portrayed wasn't really my cup of tea, she was too trashy and i still think that AnnaLynne McCord would have played a much better Samantha Jones). And we would see a grown up Carrie, not in highschool anymore and becoming self-absorbed like she is, which started to happen in the final episodes of the second season.

So time will say for this show, i haven't read the books but i hope what comes is more promising that this past two seasons, or at least, more oriented to the first show because that's what we're all expecting without having too many expectations about it.

'The Carrie Diaries' pilot

So, on Monday 'The Carrie Diaries' premiered and as skeptikal as i was, i have to admit that i really liked it. It's nowhere close to 'Sex and the City' but it was a nice start, young (and virgin) Carrie Bradshaw making her way into the city, love and life basically, and the whole thing worked. There were some nice references to the good old show like her C. neckless (like the Carrie necklace our SJP used to wear) and the flawless ending with young Carrie sitting on her desktop table to write her journal (there were no Macs then in 1984), so it was a nice wink. Also, Century 21 as her introductory world into fashion and the love of the city that was always present on the show, makes me want to see more, i want to see Carrie drinking her first cosmopolitan, i want to see her starve and buy Vogue instead, failing to find her Big love, so keep calm and Carrie on.

Hot child in the city

The first official trailer for 'The Carrie Diaries' is out and well, one has to keep in mind that this won't be anything like the series, just like with the movies, either that or pretend this doesn't exist. But even though i like to think that the films never happened, i'm still gonna watch the pilot and give this hot mess a try. I haven't read the book yet and have no hopes whatsoever for this show, (if it didn't work out with the 80s spin-off 'Gossip Girl' tried to make with Lily Rhodes/Van der Woodsen/Bass, it won't work with this) but well, decide for yourselves, here's the trailer (footage starts at 0:18'):

How different would 'Sex and the City' be if were on TV now?

'Sex and the City' premiered on HBO 14 years ago (can you believe?) and BuzzFeed has wondered what would these ladies be like if the show was now on TV, they sorted 28 ways in which the show would be different now but here are my faves:

- Samantha would run a social media marketing company.

- They'd eat Magnolia Bakery's cake pops instead of cupcakes.

- Carrie would be insane for Pierre Hardy shoes instead of Manolo Blahniks.

- Carrie would write for Vogue.com instead of "Vogue".

- And she'd have at least 60,000 followers on Twitter.

- Carrie would refuse to give up her Blackberry while all her friends make fun of her for not having an Iphone (pretty much my life).

- Instead of breaking up with Carrie via PostIt, Burger would have broken up with her over Gchat.

- Instead of Cosmos they'd drink vodka sodas.


- Instead of this Gucci fannypack she'd carry a huge-ass Celine bag.

(AS IF, the Gucci fanny-pack is one of the best and one of my favourite fashion statements of the show).

- Charlotte would have met Harry on JDate.

- And she would have gotten all the ladies to try a juice fast.

- Carrie never would have followed Aleksander Petrovsky to Paris.

- Big would take cabs.

- Miranda would run the marathon again - in barefoot shoes.

- Carrie would eBay her stuff instead of giving it away.

- Samantha would read '50 Shades of Grey' and decide it's hardly raunchy or scandalous at all.

- Instead of Tivo-Ing 'Jules and Mimi' Miranda would DVR 'Downton Abbey'.

- Instead of writing a weekly column for the New York Star, Carrie would be a blogger.

The Carrie Diaries

I haven't read the book but the show will portray teenage Carrie during her highschool years in the 80s, which means lots of 80s fashion disasters which is totally fine by me (i'm a sucker for the 80s). The only bad thing about this is that it will be only her, no Charlotte, Samantha or Miranda but well, let's hope the show does well because it will be interesting and fun to watch. I haven't seen AnnaSophia Robb in pretty much anything, only in 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' but let's hope she can do Carrie Bradshaw justice. Sarah Jessica Parker has already given Robb her blessing so let's hope this doesn't disappoint. I think this might be better than all those 'Sex and the City' movies which i like to pretend that they were never made.

the big 3-0

The 20s, such a safe place. This is not a "I don't wanna grow up" thing, but 20s mean young, 30s mean you're not anymore, at least to the world. Not like i fear growing old or getting into adulthood (i have my job, i have my flat, i'm already there), but it's the passing of time that bothers me the most, how yesterday i turned 23 and now i'm suddenly 30, i'm on that other side, because there's always that other side, like with virginity or with the period, or the driving license, there's always those who have it or have done it and those who don't.

But well, i guess what matters is how you feel and that you're good about yourself, and i am, so fuck it all and let's celebrate (fave song to get in the party mood these days):
