Girlbands of the 90s

Girlbands owned the 90s, i don't think there can be now a group with all female members having success like it happened then but maybe one of those bands will prove me wrong.

Sugababes' original members (the band has now been totally replaced), have reunited and are already recording in the studio! This one is probably one of my fave bands back then, which made me remind of many other girlbands i used to play nonstop on my casette player, so here are my fave 3, as well as some others worth mentioning:

- Sugababes: their first album 'One Touch' is really a little jewel, it sounded really different at the time, though it had similarities to All Saints, and proved that they didn't need to wear flashy outfits or do any choreographies to succeed, here's of course, everyone's favourite and also another track that i adore:

Overload

Soul Sound

- All Saints: these four ladies also made a difference, they dethroned the Spice Girls and brought to the girlband scenario some quality to the music and lyrics, another band of talented girls but who didn't mind being sexy at the same time. Obligatory 'Pure Shores' song and also their first single 'I Know Where It's At' which i played over and over and over again, as well as their first album:

Pure Shores

I Know Where It's At

- TLC: Second best selling girlband ever (1st are the Spice Girls and 3rd Destiny's Child), their album 'Crazy Sexy Cool' was the first CD i ever bought and damn it was good. I have to admit that the death of Lisa 'Left Eye' Lopes was really shocking to me, as well to the world, but this band was the soundtrack of my teen years and it was really sad. Everyone knows 'Waterfalls' so i'm posting two of my faves, the fantastic and elegant 'Creep' and the so very 90s sound, video and everything 'What About our Friends' from their first album, which i bought without having heard a single song but it was money well spent:

Creep

What About Your Friends

Noone of these women had later success as solo artists but they made some nice efforts, here are the three best songs a member of each band has done:

Siobhan Donaghy - Overrated

Artful Dodger feat. Melanie Blatt - Twentyfourseven

T-Boz - Touch Myself

Other bands worth mentioning of course are the Spice Girls, En Vogue, Atomic Kitten, Destiny's Child, Allure, Solid Harmonie, Girl Thing and Eternal so click on each of them for your listening pleasure.

UPDATE: Part ll continues here.

Miu Miu love

Miu Miu never ceases to amaze me, their whole tres-chic but extravagant style always captivates me and for the Autumn/Winter 2012 ad campaign they have chosen the It-Girl forever Chloë Sevigny to be their face and damn it all looks perfect, a little Bowie-esque but without losing the brand's signature chic. I would buy and wear only at Miu Miu if i had to choose, it is that serious.

Let us have cake!

TDKR

(No Spoilers whatsoever)

So, i watched the much expected, much anticipated movie from this Summer, 'The Dark Knight Rises', and while i didn't expect much, for no reason in particular, i was left unimpressed.

The movie is too long, way too long, there are too many explotions, the plot is kinda left unexplained and i got bored sometimes. I feel like maybe Christopher Nolan wasn't willing to make this movie so his heart and brains were not there because the other two Batman movies he directed were great, especially 'The Dark Knight', no need to mention that. Also, it got similar twists to TDK and some 'Inception'-esque scenes that made the movie lose more points. Still, i got a reaaally nice surprise with Anne Hathaway as Catwoman (she's never referred like that in the movie) i barely remember Michelle Pfeiffer's portrayal but Hathaway slayed, she was the scene-stealer that everyone was talking about and it needed more Selina Kyle in the movie. Also more needed? Michael Caine as Alfred, such a flawless man and actor, his role is simply so sweet that i cannot bear to see him cry onscreen.

Other cast members worth mentioning were Tom Hardy which i did not like, Gary Oldman who was, as always, good, Marion Cotillard, whose acting was surprisingly dull, and Joseph Gordon Levitt was fine. It also got tons of famous faces in minor characters, Juno Temple, Jack Bass or Eijah, the hot nurse from 'Grey's Anatomy' (too lazy to look up the names).

Anyway, i guess it's a movie one should watch but without too many expectations and lots of patience, only recommended to die hard Batman fans.

Faster Higher Stronger

This is a really great BBC documentary about gymnastics in the Olimpics, the evolution of female athletes in this sport and the stories behind many of the important gymnasts that won Gold and made an impact in the world. It's mostly about female gymnastics, there are a few male gymnasts but it's mainly focused on women from the beginning of female gymnastics to this day. You'll miss a more modern approach to it with stars of the U.S. team like Dominic Monceanu, Nastia Liukin or Shawn Johnson, but it is really worth watching if you love this sport, i didn't like 'Make It Or Break It' just because, you know?

How different would 'Sex and the City' be if were on TV now?

'Sex and the City' premiered on HBO 14 years ago (can you believe?) and BuzzFeed has wondered what would these ladies be like if the show was now on TV, they sorted 28 ways in which the show would be different now but here are my faves:

- Samantha would run a social media marketing company.

- They'd eat Magnolia Bakery's cake pops instead of cupcakes.

- Carrie would be insane for Pierre Hardy shoes instead of Manolo Blahniks.

- Carrie would write for Vogue.com instead of "Vogue".

- And she'd have at least 60,000 followers on Twitter.

- Carrie would refuse to give up her Blackberry while all her friends make fun of her for not having an Iphone (pretty much my life).

- Instead of breaking up with Carrie via PostIt, Burger would have broken up with her over Gchat.

- Instead of Cosmos they'd drink vodka sodas.

- Instead of this Gucci fannypack she'd carry a huge-ass Celine bag.
(AS IF, the Gucci fanny-pack is one of the best and one of my favourite fashion statements of the show).

- Charlotte would have met Harry on JDate.

- And she would have gotten all the ladies to try a juice fast.

- Carrie never would have followed Aleksander Petrovsky to Paris.

- Big would take cabs.

- Miranda would run the marathon again - in barefoot shoes.

- Carrie would eBay her stuff instead of giving it away.

- Samantha would read '50 Shades of Grey' and decide it's hardly raunchy or scandalous at all.

- Instead of Tivo-Ing 'Jules and Mimi' Miranda would DVR 'Downton Abbey'.

- Instead of writing a weekly column for the New York Star, Carrie would be a blogger.

Girls dancing on their own

Another 'Girls' post, just because. As i said before, this show is a grower, each episode is better than the previous one (though it's difficult to top ep. 7) but it took me 3 episodes to know i was gonna love this, and partly it was because of this scene. So Hannah had just discovered that her ex-boyfriend is gay? fuck that and dance to some music with Marnie. This is one of those scenes where a song is another character and this one is perfect, just like when you're at home and a song completely changes your mood, it won't make any sense to those who haven't seen it, i don't think it will make sense for many of those who have watched it but i liked this scene and that is all:
